Big Kid Decodables – 72 Fiction & Nonfiction Passages

Teaching phonics in isolation is not effective. These 72 skill-based passages connect spelling and reading so students see the phonics patterns they are learning in engaging, authentic texts. Each weekly passage also incorporates fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, helping teachers meet multiple objectives at once.

Most decodables feel babyish, but these are written for big kids. Third–fifth graders will enjoy high-interest fiction and nonfiction without embarrassment. The passages serve as a bridge between phonics lessons and real reading.

Each passage is provided at two levels:

• L1: more decodable, with a teacher’s guide noting Red Words and sight words.

• L2: reinforces the same pattern at a higher level, plus teacher’s guide offers extension activities.

Each Weekly Pattern includes a Fiction and Nonfiction Passage. 

Decodability depends on what you have explicitly taught. These passages emphasize multisyllabic words and focus on 36 phonics and spelling patterns from Reading Rev’s Intermediate Scope and Sequence.
