Blending lines are a great way to build fluency at the word level. This blending line strategy was created by Wiley Blevins, and explained in his book, A Fresh Look At Phonics. This approach is most useful when high-utility words are used. These are words that students will read and use in their own spelling. Many intermediate students have memorized, or orthographically mapped many common words. Using nonsense words forces them to tune into the phonetic patterns. Incorporating morphology gives you more bang for your buck! Constant review is a necessary component of instruction so a line is added to ensure practice and mastery of previously taught patterns.
Use our easy create-your –own template to quickly make blending lines for your students!
